Technical description
The PGS-500 (Russian: parashyutno-gruzovaya sistema) is a parachute-cargo system built to deliver equipment and supplies by air. A stabilising drogue draws out the main canopy, which lowers a rigged load of up to 500 kg to the ground for a low-velocity landing.
Every complete system contains four functional groups:
- Main canopy — the primary load-bearing parachute
- Spare / reserve canopy — supplied with the kit
- Rigging & suspension system — risers, slings and connectors
- Hardware & platform components — release units, links and fittings
Because it is a Low-Velocity Air Drop (LVAD) system, the PGS-500 is suited to sensitive or heavy stores that must arrive intact — from vehicles and generators to palletised humanitarian supplies.

PGS-500 questions, answered
What is the payload capacity of the PGS-500?
The PGS-500 is designed to airdrop cargo of up to 500 kg per system. Exact platform limits, rigging load ratings and descent rate are listed in the technical passport supplied with each unit, and we confirm them on request for the units you are quoting.
Is the PGS-500 new or used?
Stock is in new condition. Each system ships with its technical passport (data sheet); on the units we hold, the configuration was verified and documented (for example, checked January 2024). As with any airdrop parachute, the manufacturer manual specifies that repacking is required before operational use.
Which aircraft is the PGS-500 compatible with?
It is used from standard military transport aircraft including the An-12, An-26, An-32, An-72, An-74 and Il-76. See how cargo airdrop works for the deployment sequence.
What is included in one complete system?
A complete PGS-500 kit includes the main canopy, a spare canopy, the rigging and suspension system, and the mounting hardware, together with the platform components and technical passport. Full component-level detail is on the specifications explained page.
